TUTORIALS FOR CHANGE
Gender schemas and science careers

In her book, "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women" (MIT Press, 1998; paperback, 1999), Dr Valian asks why so few women are at the top of their profession, whether the profession be science, law, medicine, college teaching, industry, or business.  To provide an answer, Dr Valian integrates research from psychology, sociology, economics, and neuropsychology.  The data and theory from "Why So Slow?" are the starting point for the gender tutorials on this site.

THE PDK POSTER PROJECT
Using Visual Means To Challenge Stereotypes

The primary goal of this project is to encourage scientific literacy, and to promote the public's awareness and appreciation of science and technology by humanizing the image of research science and scientists. Its other major goal is mentoring women and girls who choose to pursue careers related to the physical sciences and mathematics, and to retain, at the high school and university levels, women who have already chosen such careers. The project represents an intersection between science and art, gender socialization, and education. It visualizes women in science and the role of personal choice in a life in scientific research.
GIRLSTART

Girlstart is a non-profit organization created to empower girls to excel in math, science, and technology. Founded in 1997 in Austin, Texas, Girlstart engages, educates, and motivates girls to achieve the knowledge and confidence to participate in advanced math and science classes and future careers. Girlstart offers a variety of educational formats designed for middle school girls through after-school programs, Saturday camps, and summer camps. The common theme to all Girlstart programs is the exploration of science, math, and technology in a hands-on, supportive, and fun girl-friendly environment. These programs are held at the Girlstart Tech Center and in six Austin-area middle schools. Learn about our organization and how you can contribute to a girl's life by donating, volunteering in Girlstart programs, and getting involved in our special events.

The National Girls Collaborative Project
The National Girls Collaborative Project™ (NGCP) is designed to reach girl-serving STEM organizations across the United States. An intense recruitment and selection process began Fall 2005 to identify sponsoring organizations to lead local collaboratives. The organizations selected to host local collaboratives are impressive in their knowledge, experience, and diversity. As a group, the local collaboratives have an extensive network of organizations and individuals engaged in pursuing this common goal and the opportunity to share with and learn from each other. They vary in focus areas and populations served and include higher education institutions, community-based organizations, private non-profits, but all work to increase gender equity in STEM fields.
